Keep Your Fingers Crossed About Texas Horse Racing

By GREG MELIKOV, HorsesWild contributing writer

I’m worried about Texas horse racing. Not many people outside the industry care what happens to it while the concerned can’t agree on how to solve the problems affecting thoroughbred horse racing in the Lone Star state.

Lone Star Park Race TrackCatch these doomsday comments by various parties in the industry posted on the Texas Thoroughbred Association online forum:

* I think it would be better to be in the trailer business than the horse business because there are going to be a lot more Texas horses hitting the road.

* If our legislators don’t get off their duff and do something, Texas will go down the tubes quickly now that we are surrounded with tracks that are receiving lottery money.

* VLTs (video lottery terminals) would be great, but not having online wagering is just insane. With a state as big as Texas and tracks hundreds of miles away, account wagering would bring instant income into our industry from folks that love horse racing.

* VLTs are a definite strategy that needs to be pursued and be the No. 1 initiative for many reasons. The tracks have to be the first destination that gambling is allowed in the state because that will at least ensure that the tracks always remain part of the revenue stream.

I love the horse racing in Texas! The value always seems to be there!

It's a shame that politicians have to meddle in affairs that they know nothing about.

I for one hope that the public demands a continuation of a solid racing program in this state.

It's a political swag bag. IMHO, online betting, OTB, video lottery and slots will come ro Texas when the industry "hires": Trent Lott to invite Halliburton to bring it.

you think that's insane whats going on in texas?

Horse racing doesnt exist in North Carolina. The few steeplechases that we do have are slowly dwindling in number.

We have no betting...none...its illegal. You know how long it took to get the freakin lottery!??

No OTB's, no online betting, no nothing. You have to drive 2 1/2 hours just to get somewhere with racing or betting...Colonial Downs (which i really like, but i wish it would grow a lot more).

Well i know it may be rough in Texas, but it still sucks over here. I guess ima have to move somewhere with racing.
