March is the time that followers of horse racing events, picks and tips, horse betting, and horse wagering get together and gear up for the eventful Lane's End Stakes that takes place at Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky, each year. Among the preparatory races for the Kentucky Derby, which leads up to the Triple Crown horse racing championship, The Lane's End Stakes is going for a guaranteed purse of US$500,000 in 2005. This major Derby prep race, a Grade II stakes race for three year old thoroughbred horses, is raced at a distance of 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs) on the dirt. In 2004, Sinister G galloped away with the Lane's End Stakes championship over Tricky Taboo at second and Little Matth Man at third. Nicknamed “Jekyll and Hyde” for his unpredictable race performances, Sinister G earned $300,000 with the 2004 victory to push his career bankroll to $380,416. Formerly known as the Spiral Stakes, the Lane's End Stakes is part of the prep races for the Kentucky Derby, first run on May 17, 1875, at 1½ miles, the same distance as the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris,, in front of an estimated crowd of 10,000 horse racing enthusiasts.
Lane's End Stakes 2005 Possible Race Contenders and Top Earnings
Afleet Alex, Bandini, and Declan's Moon are some of the early favorites among
top Kentucky Derby race contenders, although it is still a bit early to confirm
who will race at the Lane's End Stakes on March 26. Bred from Northern Afleet
and Maggy Hawk (Hawkster), Afleet Alex of Florida had the help of trainer
Tim Ritchey and jockey John Velazquez to build a career record of 7 (5-2-0)
at $710,800. Afleet Alex, with his Dosage of 2.11 and Best Beyer of 106, has
a three year old win at (Oaklawn) Mountain Valley Stakes and two year old wins
at (Saratoga) Hopeful-G1, (Saratoga) Sanford-G2, (Delaware) AlwN1X, and (Delaware)
MSW.
With a career record of 4 (2-1-0) at $99,180, Bandini of Kentucky has
a 3.57 Dosage and 98 Best Beye, and was bred from Fusaichi Pegasus and Divine
Dixie (Dixieland Band). Bandini, with the support of trainer Todd Pletcher and
jockey John Velazquez, won the (Gulfstream) AlwN1X and (Gulfstream) MSW as a
three year old.
With a Dosage of 3.50 and Best Beyer of 107, Declan's Moon of Maryland,
who holds a career record of 5 (5-0-0) at $627,300, was bred from Malibu Moon
and Vee Vee Star (Norquestor). With trainer Ronald Ellis and jockey Victor Espinoza
at the helm, Declan's Moon has won the Santa Catalina-G2 as a three year old
as well as the Hollywood Futurity-G1, (Hollywood) Hollywood Prevue-G3, (Del
Mar) Del Mar Futurity-G2, and Del Mar-MSW as a two year old.

Lane's End Stakes 2004: Sinister G scored a Lane’s End upset on March 20, 2004. He sparkled in his graded stakes debut on Saturday, notching a 1 1/2-length win in the Lane's End Stakes (G2) at Turfway Park. Ridden by jockey Paul Toscano for his father, trainer John Toscano Jr., Sinister G came into the 1 1/8-mile Lane's End off a second-place finish by a nose to Song of the Sword in an allowance race over one mile and 70 yards at Aqueduct on March 5. Sent away at odds of 16.40-to-1, Sinister G set the pace through a half-mile in :47.33. He turned away a challenge from That's An Outrage with a half-mile remaining and drove clear in the stretch to stop the clock in 1:50.71 over a track rated fast. Tricky Taboo finished second, followed by Little Matth Man another three-quarters of a length back in third. Birdstone, who raced along the rail the majority of the race, weakened in the stretch to finish 10 ¾ lengths behind Sinister G.

In Florence, Kentucky, near Cincinnati can be found Turfway Park, the successor to "Old Latonia," which operated from 1883 to 1939 about 10 miles north of the present site. The race track opened in 1959 as Latonia Race Course, and was renamed to Turfway Park in 1986. Turfway saw its largest $2 win payoff at $267.60 on January 1999 and its largest $2 superfecta payoff at $106,848.20 only recently, on March 2004. Three-time Eclipse Award winner Alysheba broke his maiden at Turfway on September 1986 while Winning Colors, one of just three fillies to win the Kentucky Derby, earned her final win in the 1989 Turfway Budweiser Breeders' Cup. Turfway's premier race, now known as the Lane's End Stakes, has produced four winners of Triple Crown races: Lil E. Tee (Kentucky Derby), Hansel (Preakness and Belmont), Prairie Bayou (Preakness), and Summer Squall (Preakness); as well as four Eclipse Award winners, including Hall of Famer Serena's Song. Through 10 runnings, the Kentucky Cup Day of Champions has produced two Classic winners, five Eclipse Award champions including 2001 Horse of the Year Point Given, and six Breeders' Cup winners. Perfect Drift is the only horse to win both the Lane's End Stakes (2002) and the Kentucky Cup Classic (2003).
