137th Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park Contenders

The final jewel of the Triple Crown races culminates on June 11 for the 137th Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, New York, the climax of the world-famous thoroughbred horse racing in America.

2005 Belmont Stakes Contenders

Belmont Stakes, $1 million Test of the Champion for 3-year-olds, is the oldest of the top three races (with Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes) and the longest at one and a half miles.

Last year horse racing fans cheered for strong Triple Crown contender, Smarty Jones, only to be disappointed by Nick Zito's entry, Birdstone.

For the 27th straight year, 2005 will be another Triple Crown-less year, but that doesn't eliminate the excitement for Belmont. After winning the Preakness Stakes (and despite placing 3rd in the Kentucky Derby) Afleet Alex is favorite to win. Long-shot Derby winner Giacomo is also out to recapture top honors after finishing third at the Old Hilltop.

Aside from these two champions, many of this year's Belmont contenders are are non-Derby and Preakness starters. Will Zito's bad days at the tracks continue, or will one of his horses pull another great upset? Or will Giacomo prove once and for all what he's really made of?

All these questions will be answered when the 137th Belmont Stakes kick off on June 11 at Belmont Park, New York, the final race for the 2005 Triple Crown season.
